If you have a basement in your home, you may have a sump pump. Sump pumps are located under your basement or in your crawlspace, and their purpose is to keep your house from flooding. There are two types of sump pumps you could have in your home. A pedestal sump pump has a motor above the pump where you can easily activate it, although these pumps are made to activate themselves if the water level gets too high and the sensor (or ball) rises above a specific level. The other type of sump pump is a submersible pump, in which the motor is contained inside the pump and sealed in to avoid electrical currents that could shock you.
There is debate over which sump pumps are best, but the important thing is to be sure yours is working how it should and keeping your house from flooding in case of emergency. Sump pumps can last anywhere from 5 to 25 years, depending on the type of pump and how often it is activated. If you don’t know if you have a sump pump or where it is located, you should probably find out, especially if you are in an area where flooded basements are a real possibility.
